I got bored today and decided I wanted to modify my plastic AR carry handle to resemble a rear sight like this:
First, I used a hack saw to cut the rear sight section of the carry handle off. Since I used a plastic carry handle, this was very easy to do and didn't take more than a few minutes. The plate that gets screwed on to hold the handle in place was made of metal, but it is pretty thin and was easy to cut as well. After I had the carry handle in two pieces, I began sanding down what had just been cut to smooth the edges. Once that was done, I hit it with a coat of flat black paint to finish it off. Here's how it turned out:
