ok I just had to do it cuz i was soooo damn offended when i saw it!....ITS TIME TO GO ON A RANT!!!!
I am going to defend the sniper role with everything that I have (being that I am a former sniper).
Snipers are very unique and extremely useful players...IF THEY ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!!!! There is no situation that calls for a sniper to take on the enemy as if he was a rifleman. They must stick to the back of the pack and nit-pick the enemy...trust me, its the most effective method. In addition to this, SNIPERS MUST NEVER WORK ALONE! Its a sure-fire way to get eliminated so they must always have someone along the lines of a basic rifleman to get them out of a jam if needed.
As for those who say that they're gun can compete with the range of an airsoft sniper rifle........................well apparently you have not played with a sniper that had they're gun upgraded to the point where it could pull off 100 YARD SHOTS!!!
Do not speak of what you do not truly understand. A sniper can dominate the battlefield if he knows how to do it.....and just cuz you saw your friend and his WELL L96 get crushed dose not mean that the sniper role in anyway is obsolete in the sport of airsoft........please feel free to comment

I agree, the sniper in airsoft can be a huge advantage, especially in a defensive situation. In my last game, I was in a three man squad trying to flank a base, when all of a sudden one of our guys calls hit. None of us heard the shot, nor saw where the BB came from. Our man was hit while we are moving which made us think the Sniper was closer than he really was.
That one guy alone stopped our advance for a good 5-7 minutes, which can seem like ages in the middle of a fast-paced game, which allowed the majority of the enemies to focus on the rest of our team trying to take the base.
BTW, yes we took him out, it took me waaaay too long. We were at least 60-70 yards away from each other, him with a upgraded TM VSR 10. I just got lucky with my lob shots. :-p

lol...even even lobbing shots at ridiculous ranges is part of being an effective sniper.

no doubt bro, Häyhä was an awesome sniper.
Here are some other legends and the mark they left on history.
Simo Häyhä (Finland) - 505 confirmed kills
Carlos Hathcock (USA - USMC) - 93 confirmed kills ( fact: Hathcock was the originator of the popular through the scope kill seen in todays movies) He is said to be the greatest counter sniper of all time.
Chuck Mawhinney (USA - USMC) - record number of confirmed kills for USMC sniper at 103.
...and last but not least
Rob Furlong (Canada) - holds the record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in combat, at 2430 metres (2657 yards, or 1.51 miles).
All in all reading the stories of these legendary snipers has reminded me that there is a great art to sniping and along with that comes a rush that in my opinion cannot be given by any other combat role.

you forgot to mention the ability of sniper, preferably with a buddy to perform re-con and eliminate forward enemy targets prior to full engagement. though i will admit that this takes a very good stalker to accomplish with out getting taken out in the process.
Also i feel that the cross between rifleman and sniper should also be addressed here, (i may be biased in this regards as i use a weapon that falls somewhere between a normal rifle and a sniper rifle). I've always felt that while a bolt action sniper may not be the best role to take for some ops, the role of scout/counter sniper is beneficial role to take in almost any scenario. As a aeg, even if only semi is enabled like my own SL8, an individual is able to return fire at range and put more shots down range than a bolt ever could. now as you said the role of sniper is not to be downplayed in the least. i do how ever feel the counter sniper deserves some mention here as i feel they are opposite sides of the same coin.

you make very good points about the sniper role but in airsoft most sniper are not an electric gun but gas or spring bolt action gun and if i am able to go to the night game on the 21st or the game on the 28th i am sniping with my l96 just got to get a few more things for it but will bring it if i can not use but hope that i can

ok I've been off for a while...
so regarding the post about counter sniping.....very much true and counter sniper can get even more interesting weather its a a basic rifleman taking on the task or even a sniper hunting down other snipers.
As for sniping at night....useless. I have found scopes of any kind to absolutely useless at night unless utilized with night vision systems.

i agree fully that they are useless at night even when there is moonlight. i never play with my SL8 at night, its not worth the effort.

I agree that snipers are a very imprtant part of any outfit but the downside to sniping in airsoft is that with a spring system, while accurate, doesnt have a very good range unless you have an extremely upgraded gun.

I would prefer a spring sniper over anything else upgraded or not, one of the reasons, in the winter there is no gas, as we all know gas doesn't expand in the winter, electric guns are somewhat loud and in winter sometimes you have to keep the battery warm. but that's just me talking.
